1. How old does my dog have to be to take the pet therapy test?
Dogs must be at least 1 year old to be tested.

  2. What does my dog have to do in order to prepare for the test?
Dogs must pass our Therapy Dog Certification Analysis. The test is on line (How does my dog become a pet therapist), or by mail or fax, so you can train and practice.

  3. Is your test the same as The AKC Canine Good Citizen® test?
No, our test is not The AKC Canine Good Citizen® test. The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test® and award are available upon request only. (www.akc.org)

  4. Does my dog have to be a purebred?
Any dog is eligible to be a Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dog - mixed breeds, rescues, retired showdogs and obedience dogs all have all made fine Therapy Dogs.

  5. What types of facilities may I visit with my dog?
After passing the testing requirements and registering, you may want to begin slowly with more traditional settings, such as nursing homes and senior homes, but then after you have some experience "under your belt", the applications are limitless - we find new environments for therapy dogs every day.

  6. If my dog doesn' t pass the test, may I retake it? If so, when am I eligible to retest?
You can retake the test any time you feel ready to do so - the next day if you wish.

  7. Does my dog need to have taken formal obedience lessons?
The test is by no means an obedience test - we prefer a more casual atmosphere. We've had Obedience Trial Champions that didn't make good therapy dogs at all. Some training is useful and we now offer therapy dog training classes.

  8. What types of health requirements are there for a dog to be a pet therapy dog?
Clean, neat, parasite free, trimmed nails and pleasant smelling along with basic veterinarian requirements. Holistic treatment is also a consideration but may limit you to facilities available. (Health Requirements)

  9. What does a typical visit entail?
Our therapy dogs give comfort and affection through petting and kisses (when invited) they ease loneliness and bolster self esteem. Some entertain with simple tricks and obedience routines.

  10. How do I sign up for the test?
Contact our headquarters toll free and we'll tell you, at 888-PET-5770.

  11. Is my dog covered by insurance while visiting a facility?
You are covered by liability and accident insurance while working under our auspices. (Insurance Info)
